چکیده

We study the nonlinear dynamics of torsional meta-molecules—subwavelength resonators with strong coupling between electromagnetic excitation and rotational deformation—and show that such structures may undergo self-oscillations. We develop a semi-analytical model to evaluate the electromagnetic–elastic coupling in such structures. By analysing the local stability of the system, we reveal two different mechanisms leading to selfoscillations. Contrary to many previously studied optomechanical systems, self-oscillations of torsional meta-molecules can be extremely robust against mechanical damping. Due to the chiral nature of the structure, a consequence of self-oscillations in this system is dynamic nonlinear optical activity, which can be actively controlled by a range of parameters such as the field strength and polarization of the incident wave. 3 Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed. Nonlinear Analysis of Interaction with SVC in Stressed Power Systems: Effect of SVC Controller Parameters

In this paper, the effect of Static VAr Compensator (SVC) parameters on the nonlinear interaction of steam power plant turbine-generator set is studied using the Modal Series (MS) method. A second order representation of a power system equipped with SVC is developed and then by MS method the nonlinear interaction of torsional modes is assessed under various conditions and the most influencing f...

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS Torsional oscillations in the solar convection zone

Recent analysis of the helioseismic observations indicate that the previously observed surface torsional oscillations extend significantly downwards into the solar convection zone. In an attempt to understand these oscillations, we study the nonlinear coupling between the magnetic field and the solar differential rotation in the context of a mean field dynamo model, in which the nonlinearity is...

Coupling between radial and torsional oscillations in a magnetized plasma and possible stellar applications

The weakly non-linear interaction of slow magnetoacoustic and torsional Alfvén waves propagating along an unperturbed poloidal magnetic field in a stellar interior is studied in the high plasma β limit. It is shown that slow magnetoacoustic waves parametrically drive torsional modes with the half frequency and wave number. Therefore global slow magnetoacoustic waves which have a radial velocity...

Origin of Solar Torsional Oscillations

Helioseismology has revealed many details of solar differential rotation and also its time variation, known as torsional oscillations. So far there is no generally accepted theoretical explanation for torsional oscillations, even though a close relation to the solar activity cycle is evident. On the theoretical side non-kinematic dynamo models (including the Lorentz force feedback on differenti...
